Differences between teaching in a community college and a high school?

teaching
kat i asked:

For people who have taught at both locations, what are some of the differences and pros/cons about teaching at a community college and teaching at a high school?

I’ve taught English and Humanities at community colleges, and I currently teach elementary school music at a private school. But I’ve never taught English at the HS level and want to know its ups and downs.

Thanks!
Thanks for all the answers so far! I hope they keep coming!
For those who asked, there were ups and downs teaching at the CC, but overall I enjoyed it. Main problem is that I only landed adjunct (part time) positions, which offer terrible pay and no benefits (it’s very difficult to get a full-time tenured position). Pretty much all of my students with part time jobs at the mall were making more money than I was. You can’t live off the salary of adjuncting.

What is the relationship between theories of learning and theories of teaching?

pippaleeney asked:

The full question is – what is your perspective on how students learn? What is your perspective on how teachers should teach? What is the realtionship between theories of learning and theories of teaching?

I’ve started by answering the first two questions – saying that students and teachers all have preferred styles to teaching and learning, but both should employ a variety of methods to get the best outcomes.

However the second part of the question I’m lacking in detail, here’s what I have:
There are four major theories in teaching, Constructivist, Behavioural, Cognitive & Humanistic. Theories of teaching facilitate theories of learning. Therefore teachers need to be flexible and reflective to pick up how students respond to different teaching methods. Reflective teaching: the process of thinking about one’s teaching with a goal of improving one’s teaching. Rarely would anyone one theory of teaching be used in isolation.

Any suggestions with what I can add??

What’s the difference between teaching a child to have faith and brainwashing a child to believe nonsense?

Desiree asked:

A Christian just told me that creationism is not brainwashing a child to believe nonsense; it’s teaching a child to have faith. Frankly, I don’t see the difference; am I missing something?
